Recently on our Facebook page, there was a passionate discussion about why Tesla drivers choose Tesla over other EVs.

Some thought that Tesla owners weren't as interested in the eco benefits and were simply dazzled by the cool factor.

We love that more people are choosing an EV, no matter the reason. More exposure for EVs not only benefits the environment but also shows automakers there is real demand for these vehicles and the advanced technology they offer.

But who better to ask than all of you Tesla drivers?
So, what was the deciding factor that helped you decide to go EV?

To me it's about being able to drive the future. I chose Tesla because they are the only ones who make a nice looking EV with good range. I also like that the car gets better with time with the OTA updates.

Simply it will be the best vehicle in its class.

Subsidies is one aspect and I felt somewhat guilty about being a pioneer with my solar panels and now a Tesla but after reading the article "Health Benefits of Wind and Solar offset all Subsidies" in Nature Energy it puts it all in perspective (Google it). Too me the subsidies are just a reward for going first in doing the right thing.

I didn't choose an EV, I chose Tesla.

Once I chose Tesla, I did my homework on EVs and subsequently convinced my parent's to get a Model S and of course every time I pump gas in my ICE I hate it.

Frankly the Model 3 is hands down the best new car I can purchase in my desired price range.

I love everything about it and I can't wait to drive it.

I wouldn't make the switch to an EV for a Chevy Bolt though...

Two EV's in our family, a Model S and a Leaf. Moved from a Subaru Forester XT with the Leaf and a Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid with the Model S. We went EV for lower/no emissions and moving to local source for "fuel".

Of course for the environmental benefit. That is at least for anyone knowledgeable about science or the envirionment. If you start an ICE car in a closed garage it will kill you pretty quick. It just takes a little longer in the atmosphere. It was understandable to use an ICE car in the past perhaps, but now that there is an alternative, not so much.

So why I chose an electric.

                A) Range is now large enough to cover my commute for a couple of days without me having to worry about it
                B) The tech packages allow for less stress sitting in traffic (Tesla mainly for this)
                C) The ability to never have to go to the gas station again. That alone is going to save 15-20 mins a week!
                D) The zero emissions is pretty awesome. I drove a TDi.. so maybe I need to make up for all that extra NOX
                E) I can refill my car from my solar panels. (Basically)
                F) HOV single lane access! (for the time being.. come on CA and extend it!)

I'm already a tech person, so Tesla was the way to go for me. I looked at plug-in's etc in the past, but finally with the range I can make use of all the extra power my solar system generates!

A few years ago, we (at least in BC) had huge subsidies for LED bulbs. Those subsidies are no longer required as better, and cheaper LED bulbs are now available without a subsidy than I paid with a (hefty) subsidy.

Subsidies balance the early adopter premium you would otherwise pay. Eventually, with economies of scale, and evolutionary refinements and other efficiencies, subsidies are no longer required.

                    I bought a Leaf in 2012 because:
                    • My existing car had 176,000 miles, and wasn't going to pass inspection again without a lot of work (money)
                    • I studied electrical engineering in college, and always new EVs were superior (except for horrible battery technology).
                    • State & federal incentives brought the Leaf's price down to $24k
                    • I didn't trust Tesla at the time (Model S wasn't out yet; closest service center was 5 hours away)

For me the compelling reasons to choose an EV (and why I've driven one for the past 5 years and would never go back to ICE) include
                      • reduced environmental impact, both due to reduced CO2 emissions overall as well as eliminaation of localized pollutants from combustion. As the grid gets cleaner, the entire fleet of EVs gets cleaner.
                      • vastly reduced maintenance.
                      • no more gas station visits. You don't realize until you have it how convenient it is to "fuel up" at home.
                      • superior and instant acceleration. Seriously, I didn't realize how bad most (automatic transmission)
                      • The combustion engine is the last vestiges of the fire age -- best to leave that age behind...
That being said, there is no way I would have ever purchased a Model S. Not only is it beyond my means, but I like to think even if I had the money I would never spend that much on a car. Though now I realize Tesla probably took the right approach, I was initially quite upset that they only made a vehicle for the top 1% (or 1/2%?). However, in hindsight I'm not sure they could have done it differently and I'm already signed up to pay way more than ever thought I would for a car to buy into this future. (Can you tell I'm not a huge fan of "cars" in general?)

In my area I see a lot of Model S's around. My feeling is that for 80% of these owners, they didn't buy a Tesla out of social conscience or environmental concerns -- they just wanted the best car out there (and also get carpool lane stickers out of the deal).

                        Combination of different factors really:
                        - cool, relatively new technology, clearly the way of the future
                        - formidable driving experience, the T≡SLA grin!
                        - contribution to a more environmentally friendly solution to transportation
                        - Long term reduction of cost of operation

In agreement with many of the comments already made. I actually got on the first Leaf mailing list when it was very first teased, then later they showed the first photos and I could not willingly pay money for a car of that style (sorry garsh) and did not have the money for the new Tesla coming out. I would have not had an issue trusting an unknown company. I was a good looking car after all, how bad could it be ;). And have held out hope that they would stick around long enough to finally release a mass market priced model.
So by the time there were some alternate EVs I would consider being seen in, the 3 was already nearly here and worth the wait.

My reasons for buying a Model 3:
                            1. The most significant thing I can do in Ontario to reduce our carbon emmissions and help to secure my son's future. I have daily thoughts about what I could get as a bridge that is zero emmission. Nothing quite does the extreme range of a daily drive.
                            2. It kicks ass. The instant tourque, acceleration and stability will make my Tesla the best driving car I have ever had. Satisfies my mid life crisis.
                            3. Spreading the word. I already have 100 + people who want a ride. I have never met someone who has had a ride who doesn't want an EV. I think this is what will push the S curve up at a high rate. Once there are a million Model 3's on the road 10 million people a year will get to ride in one and none of them will want an ICE again.
                            4. It shows that the future can be better. Clean, sustainable, cool, fun and just beautiful.

The Bolt is a reasonably priced long-range EV, so I'd love to hear your thoughts!

                              Well said!

It's an ugly, plastic, econobox in my opinion. Really to go a step further, I would say they could not have made it uglier if they tried.

The funny thing is before Tesla came along I would have never purchased an American car.

I have always preferred German cars, though I currently do not drive one.

Pretty much spot on for me too,

I like my toys (gizmos) in a car
They need to be fairly nippy (sub 7 seconds) for overtaking on single carriageway roads.
The environmental part is less important to me... no car is 'good' for the environment, that said there is nothing wrong with choosing the cleanest car you can afford.
Cost of the car throughout its ownership comes into play.

I have yet to get inside a Tesla (despite knowing a couple of people who have owned a Model S) but one thing that does concern me is their reports of poor build quality (2014 & 2015 cars)
So I am keeping an open mind until I can get into a '3' and see for myself if they have improved it significantly over these 4 years (not likely to get into one until 2019)

But what I do like about Tesla is:
                                Charging network
                                Performance
                                Range
                                Tech

                                Not so keen on:
Colour choice (no worse than most other manufacturers though)
                                No spare wheel option
                                Price (in the UK)

If i am not satisfied then I will look towards VAG again as their tech is good and build quality generally pretty good, their range (miles) is not good enough yet though IMO.

Add to that, it is lacking the biggest advantage Tesla has over every other EV, Superchargers.

I actually liked the Chevy Bolt concept. Then the production version was released. :(
Even the new Prius looks better than the Bolt. And I don't like the looks of the new Prius.
