Like most of you, I have probably another year and a half to await my new Model 3. Some of my investments are doing better than expected and I might be able actually to opt for a Model S in the next six months (if I really wanted to spend that much on a car!). Given the latest guesses as to how much the options on the Model 3 will be, I figure that I would be paying about half as much for a 3 when it comes out as I would be for a comparably equipped S now. (Either way, the SuperCharging for life is gone!)

So, I'm curious, how many of you would jump to a current/new Model S, if you had the option and how many would wait and see what the Model 3 brings?

    Thanks.

The biggest reason I wouldn't buy one today is the fact that I expect the Model S to have the same or better features as the 3 and they don't right now. I'm sure it's coming in the next several month's but for now, I personally wouldn't buy an S or X until the HUD and new batteries.

It's a dream car for me so yes. I'd prefer the 3 but at the same time I do have guilt everytime I stop at the pump.

I would wait for the 3. Given the fact that it is still a mystery that I'm dying to not only to see but be one of the first to own. Though the S is my favorite car EVER, I feel that my obsession with the 3, would prevent me from being totally satisfied. For example: I have my heart/stomach set on steak for awhile, but I get something equally great like sushi, but I'm going to think about the steak for awhile. It sounds silly but multiply that by a billion, and that is my best comparison. Do I sound crazy?

Also, to Steve C's point, the S and X will eventually get the exact same or better equipment as the 3, so buying now would cheat you out of getting the newest and best.

The S and X are too big and luxurious for my taste. And I believe that the Model 3 will be even more of a turning point in the current vehicular transition. Signified by the fact that lots of new techniques are being developed for the Model 3.

The Model S is much larger than I want (the Model 3 for that matter is somewhat larger than I prefer) and for me, the base Model S is not worth the jump in price up from the base Model 3 ($33,000 premium). AND want all the expected new tech that will be coming with the Model 3 that is not currently part of the current models.

I would buy a MS right now if I could afford it because I like a hatchback and all of the utility that it provides. When Julie has to take eight cats to the vet, the extra space is greatly appreciated. Julie has 30 cats, so this happens at least 4 times a year.

If I could afford a MS, then I could also afford to get a M≡ as well.

'Can afford' is a very subjective term IMO.

Can I pay for a Model S or part finance it - yes.

Will I ever get comfortable spending for its upkeep that is insurance, servicing, 21inch tyres, etc. - most likely not.

Do I appreciate it's extra space and exterior dimensions compared to Model 3 - not really.

Then is there sufficient justification to spend extra on a car that is not the best match for my needs - absolutely not.

Absolutely. While the Model S is larger than anything I would prefer, I would no doubt buy one today if cost was of no concern.

I think once the 3 is fully known then the question will be more relevant. But, for the most part, if the 3 has all the features they've already said it does, then I don't see the reason to spend the extra money on the S. Of course, I already have an S and don't likely have a long wait on the 3 either. Could change if I was looking at 2+ year wait.

I'm in the "wait for the Model 3" camp.

Don't get me wrong, the S is a great car....BUT.......a little too big for my taste.

Also, IIRC, Elon said that from a design, engineering and assembly point of view, the Model S exists in spite of itself.

The Model 3 will incorporate all the design, engineering and assembly lessons learned of the past six or so years of Model S.

I expect the torsional rigidity, body panel gaps and other aspects of the Model 3 to simply be better than the Model S based on those lessons learned.

From a tech and coolness aspect I'd agree 100%. But I'm rather tired of having to contort to wash my current SUV and looking forward to a sedan again so I'd have to say a Model S.

If it wasn't for the lease I have now I'd probably jump on a Model S CPO and consider selling it of the Model 3 suited me more. I like the size of the Model S but I'm sure the Model 3 will have more going for it than a 3 year old CPO at the same price point so we'll have to wait and see.

Heh. I don't like Sedans or SUVs. But the Model S and Model X are both extremely alluring. If a Model S Coupe (with Falcon Wing Doors!) arrives before I could take Delivery of a Model ☰, that is what I'd get instead.

I have gone back and fourth so many times on S and 3 it's not even funny. Having actually ordered a model S and then going back and cancelling cause I was losing sleep over the deal, I'll leave you with this. Buy a car you will enjoy and can COMFORTABLY live with. My dream car is a Model S and I'm sure some day I will get one, but for me and at my current stage in life, I would rather spend the extra money on a house (TESLA SOLAR ROOF :)), vacations, etc. Having a 40 min drive to work every day I will spend a lot of time in my car so I want it to be nice. I currently am driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix with 214k miles on it. I just put about $1,600 worth of maintenance into it in order to make it last till the Model 3 arrives. It's a gamble, but being in the mid-west and being and early day one reservation holder, I'm hoping I don't have more than a year left to wait, but time will tell.

Tesla actually called me the other day and said they saw that I was interested in a Tesla last year and wanted to know if I wanted to get one this year or consider a CPO. I told them I would rather wait and spend 60-70K on a brand new well equipped model 3 then spend that on a Model S and be struggling with what options to get. Especially if the wait is only another year or so.

Another thing, I have that 90 lbs German Shepherd you see on my profile pic to think of. He will NEVER get in the Tesla so making sure my Grand Prix or as I call it the "Chase Mobile" (his name is Chase) is in good working order for him helps. Spending money on two cars if one is and S will keep me strapped.

                                Hope this helps

Five years ago, I was trying to decide between a Nissan Leaf and a Tesla Model S40 (chronicled here, if you'd like the details).

I'd love an S, but at this point I definitely want self-driving and a large battery, which puts the vehicle over $100k. I'm thinking that I can get a Model 3 with *every* bell & whistle for a good bit less.

                                    IMHO......

Elon stated (can't find link to exact quote) that the average price he expects the Model 3 to sell for is $US 42,000. I'm sure there will be option packages that will drive a base $US 35,000 vehicle to a price point 50% higher than said base price, i.e. $US 63,000. But I do find folks seem to be expecting a Model 3 price point that takes them well into (lower end) Model S territory.

Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but if Elon suggested the average price will be $US 42,000, perhaps we will all be pleasantly surprised....

                                      Yes...

...but then I would opt for a beachside mansion in Maui if I could too.

Can't do either, and for the same reason.

As a dog owner, I also worry about the dog in the M3. However, EVannex and others sell good seat covers. I'm going to buy the best seat cover I can afford and let my four-legged buddy share the ride with me. The wife can come too.
